11. Christopher Guest plays the Broadway-driven, hysterical director of a musical written for the sesquicentennial of a small Missouri town called Blaine. It was a reminder to us actors of where we came from, and where we will end up! If you have ever seen this type of film before, you haven't seen anything until you have seen Guffman. Instead, his Broadway show, a smash hit in 1965, became a hit film in 1968... © document.write(new Date().getFullYear()) Writers Guild of America West. All Rights Reserved. Native Alabaman Parker Posey seems more Confederacy princess than Dairy Queen counter girl. Select the department you want to search in. I always love Christopher Guest mockumentaries, but this one brought back memories. The “Guffman” of the title is Mort, a Broadway producer who fails to show up for the premiere of the original musical Red, White and Blaine, in small-town Blaine, Mo. Though it didn’t make much of a dent in the box office when it hit theaters 20 years ago, Christopher Guest’s mockumentary Waiting for Guffman has become a cult hit in the years since. It is brutally funny without being cruel. Guest, who gives a subtly amusing portrayal of Blaine's resident stage genius Corky St. Clair, begins "Guffman" with an authentic film portrait of the town and its leading lights, who touch on the history of the place. The songs by Guest and "Tap" aces Michael McKean and Harry Shearer -- including "Covered Wagons, Open-Toed Shoes" and "Stool Boom" (inspired by a presidential visit that launched a foot- rest industry) -- have amusing touches. The winners show a certain talent to amuse, and Corky recruits a few more volunteers, including a hunky mechanic whose father regards the impresario with unmixed hostility (a gimlet-eyed cameo for ubiquitous Brian Doyle- Murray). The role is loosely based on a character Guest first played in the early 1980s on HBO and on "Saturday Night Live." None of Christopher Guest's other efforts lived up to 'Best in Show'--how could they? "Waiting for Guffman" had no script & the cast flew by the seat of their pants much like Second City sketches were. We re-watch this at least one every year. Quickly browse titles in our catalog based on the ones you have picked. Credulousness remains a local trait in the modern era, as the town gains fame from a 1946 flying saucer visit. Lewis Arquette projects too much talent and depth to be funny as the "Our Town" master of ceremonies. The film highlights the big dreams and raw (very raw) talent of the five stars of Red, White and Blaine, the celebratory musical commemorating Blaine, Missouri s 150th anniversary. As in subsequent films like Best in Show and A Mighty Wind, Guest and Levy outlined the script and trusted a company of seriously gifted comedic actors to take it from there. One of the best of this genre (which also includes "This is Spinal Tap" and "Best in Show") with the usual ensemble including Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard, Bob Balaban and Parker Posey. I was in a ton of those, tho never with anyone like this, but saw some auditions that still are hard to forget, tho I'd like to. All of them, even "For Your Consideration", which to me was a bit weak---but they manage to make me laugh so much. This is Christopher Guest at his very best- hilariously exploring the subtle humor of quirky well-written characters in his unique mockumentary style (he was doing it before it was cool). A director once showed it to me as a high school senior in a relatively strong urban theatre setting with surrounding suburbs. The leader is Corky St. Claire (Guest), a failed New York actor who actually believes he can stage a comeback from this small outpost of Middle America. By the time the tall, sober figure played by Paul Benedict takes his seat, picking up the "Reserved" sign off his metal folding chair, "Guffman" is nearly over, having long since lost or jettisoned its documentary pretensions. A very funny, bright movie. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. The actors peg the types they are playing perfectly. The characters are all lovable, bizarre as some of them are. Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2017. "This Is Spinal Tap" made Christopher Guest a cult figure, and he sometimes resumes his identity as guitarist Nigel Tufnel. Willard's studied studliness also hits the mark. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2013. About ten of the players from the other two movies are in this, which helps, especially the funniest of his regular crew, Fred Willard and Eugene Levy. The film highlights the big dreams and raw (very raw) talent of the five stars of Red, White and Blaine, the celebratory musical commemorating Blaine, Missouris 150th anniversary. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. But though a few of its characters are drawn with deadly accuracy -- especially the dentist who believes fervently in his nonexistent talent and a travel agent couple dubbed the Lunts of Blaine -- Guest's collaboration with his stars and co- writer-actor Eugene Levy too often plays like a picture the gang made up as they went along. The leads in "Red, White and Blaine" are a mixed lot. When he conceived the play, Neil Simon thought he’d come up with “a grim, dark play about two lonely men” in Felix Ungar and Oscar Madison, Simon told The Paris Review. Having taken over drama classes at the high school and fired up the theater group with acclaimed productions of "Barefoot in the Park" and "Backdraft," Corky looms as the obvious choice to celebrate Blaine's 150th with a mini-pageant. Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy’s satire of community theater, and the mounting of a show from soup to nuts, is both devastatingly spot-on and heartfelt, with characters whose passion (for them, the play is really the thing) keeps the comedy of the film from devolving into ridicule. I liked it so much that I bought a copy for my brother-in-law, who was thrilled to get it. Warm comedy-documentary of not-yet-ready for prime time players. More from the Director Christopher Guest and his talented Team of Thesps. The losers, including a pathetic "Raging Bull" impressionist, offer droll glimpses into the world of utterly inept would-be luminaries. From Christopher Guest comes this "mockumentary" about the small-town community of Blaine, Missouri, as they prepare for the 150th anniversary of their town. Rentals include 30 days to start watching this video and 48 hours to finish once started. What are the best written scripts & shows of all time? Guffman, or the man believed to be Guffman, does not enter the film until fairly late. I had to buy this movie since it was my 1st movie "extra" part. Some people talk about how "This is Spinal Tap" is SO biographical, but I maintain that "Red, White, and Blaine," is the work of ALL American theatre programs. Opening with serious fun and games over a model of the town hall and green, as models of portable toilets and trash bins are shifted about like Monopoly pawns, the early fragments depict Blaine as a town founded by an idiot swindler who claimed he had guided pioneers to the edge of the Pacific. If you enjoy Guest's other work, you will love this film! Of all the SCTV comedy group this one I appreciated more than even Spinal Tap and Dog Show. I'm a huge fan of Spinal Tap and enjoyed A Mighty Wind but this was poor in comparison. They did.
