The first episode to feature Anneke Wills (best known as Polly from Doctor Who, and credited here as Annika), Newley began an affair with her after she appeared in the programme, moving in with her while still married to his first of four wives. First broadcast: Saturday 19th November 1960. Both firmly of its time and spectacularly ahead of it, The Strange World Of Gurney Slade is to television comedy what The Prisoner has become to drama - brilliantly inventive, startlingly surreal and unlike anything previously seen on television. 2015 marks the 55th anniversary of The Strange World of Gurney Slade, possibly the most unusual series ever covered on this site. The theme tune is also up there with the best of them. Rate. -. "The phrase "worst to best" doesn't really apply with Gurney Slade, as there's not really a "worst" episode in the run. It's a world in which characters can step out of advertising posters and where he can hear the most intimate thoughts of passers by. And Princess Eleanor is provided with a good titter when Gurney's executioner has to repair his axe with... a countersunk screw. It is a bitterly ironic ending and together with the stylised court room scenes offers a pessimistic view of the individual versus mass conformity (the jury is a group of men in identical garb of flat cap and white muffler - similar in style to the later Peter Cook appearances in the 'Dagenham dialogues') that would not seem out of place in McGoohan's, The motif of the storyteller indicates not only a through line to the surreal fantasy of 'The Girl Who Was Death' episode of, One of the children, a young boy, is asked why he didn't stop in and watch the telly after he interrupts the tale. The Strange World of Gurney Slade, devised by and starring Anthony Newley, is one of my favourite sitcoms for a number of reasons. 2. Rate. Gurney compares the enthusiastic smile of the man in the poster to the similar expressions on the faces of Columbus, upon discovering America, and Pythagoras, when sorting out his isosceles triangle. Gurney finds that he's seen as nothing more than a performing machine, the characters he's created wonder what's going to become of them, and the cast decide to have a bit of a rave in their last ten minutes together. Stars Anthony Newley. So much for Shakespeare and Sophocles. Gurney wonders whether he'd be eaten if he had to live the life of an ant, a dog reveals how he has three humans to help him out on the farm, and a well refuses to grant a wish for strength when it's offered a dud penny. Curiosity over the programme saw a repeat in 1963, but it's one that's generally fallen into obscurity, a series that wasn't appreciated by a mainstream audience in a time when niche programming schedules didn't exist. Rate. Look at the scene where Newley meets the fairy in the woods, one hand raised up as he speaks to the fairy, both hands on the pram for the reverse shots. I can’t get away from ’em. I love the out and out chaos and breaking of convention. What makes this episode so astonishing (along with the promo commercials for the series) is that it accurately predicts the audience response to the programme in which they appear. Created by Newley and written by the highly talented Sid Green and Dick Hills (who were soon to become key writers for Morecambe and Wise) this series has been newly transferred from the original 35mm film elements specifically for this release.
