“The Rhythm Section” comes from James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, and it features the kind of globetrotting, espionage and tangles with an international array of bad guys you’d expect from a 007 movie. Opting for a Greengrass-light handheld style, the fight sequences are deliberately messy, but languid edits drain most of the excitement. Following a delightfully cold-blooded turn in Paul Feigâs A Simple Favour, Lively throws herself into the central role, layering the traumatised Patrick with guilt and self-loathing as she turns tricks in a seedy London walk-up (a sequence gifted an earthy realism sadly missing thereafter). We've heard about Blake Lively's performance, but this is a revenge spy thriller and if you've seen the trailers for The Rhythm Section you know that there is plenty of violence and action in this movie. The rapport between Law and Lively allows the movie both to relax and pick up the pace. Revenge movies never go out of style and this one from The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano stars a nearly unrecognizable Blake Lively as a broken woman named Stephanie Patrick who finds a new violent purpose when she discovers that the plane crash that killed her family was not an accident. What remains is a more streamlined tale of personal empowerment, in which Livelyâs Stephanie Patrick pulls herself from destitution to become an avenging instrument of death. The film’s occasional gestures toward pseudo-feminist empowerment only compound the hollowness of its protagonist. Most audiences probably know actress Blake Lively as the star of Gossip Girl and films like The Age of Adaline. We'll see starting this weekend if The Rhythm Section can pull a Taken and kick off a franchise. Three years later, having hit rock bottom and now working as a prostitute, sheâs approached by a journalist (Raza Jaffrey) who offers new information on the attack, and possibly a chance at revenge. The Rhythm Section is an ironic title for this movie, which ultimately hits all the wrong beats and is off-balance from the start. She’s shown more of her talent and range in movies like The Shallows, The Town and A Simple Favor, but this weekend you’ll be able to see the blonde bombshell as you’ve truly never seen her before in The Rhythm Section. Well, that will really depend on who you ask. First published in 1999, Mark Burnell’s The Rhythm Section is a thriller from a different era. Instead, her transformation is largely psychological, Lively bringing a steely determination to the character while retaining a core of vulnerability that, even during a messy assassination, leaves her jittery and anxious. | Netflix’s Enola Holmes Reviews Are In, See What Critics Are Saying, Ryan Reynolds Has The Perfect ‘Apology’ To Blake Lively After Selling Aviation Gin, Looks Like The Batman’s Time Setting Has Been Revealed, Lorne Michaels Reveals How SNL Had To Scramble After Donald Trump Tested Positive For COVID-19, Top Gun: Maverick Star Tom Cruise Is Being Honored By Navy Ahead Of Its Release, How The Conners' Katey Sagal Fought To Keep Louise Around Despite Landing New TV Show, How Fargo’s E’myri Crutchfield Was Inspired By Timothy Olyphant, And What’s Coming Next For Ethelrida And Oraetta, Armie Hammer, Lily James | Netflix's Rebecca Interviews, Ken Jeong, Phillipa Soo, Margaret Cho And More Talk Netflix's Over The Moon, Kevin James, Noah Schnapp, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows & More | Hubie Halloween Interview, Schitt's Creek Ending: How Things Ended For Each Major Character, All The Haunting Of Bly Manor Ghosts Explained, Dune’s Timothee Chalamet Has Set The Record Straight On Those Viral Makeout Photos With Lily-Rose Depp, Spider-Man 3: Sony Responds To The Wild Rumors About Tobey Maguire, 10 Great Movies Available On Plex Right Now, Looks Like Netflix Is Even Canceling Shows That Hit Its Top 10 List Now, Taylor Swift And Creative Team Talk How Characters Named After Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively’s Kids Connect, 'Betty' May Be Named After Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively's Kid, But Taylor Swift Clarifies It's Not An LGBTQ Love Story, Plantation Responds After Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively Say They Are ‘Deeply Sorry’ For Wedding There, After Taylor Swift Revealed Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively’s Baby Name, Blake Writes Long Tribute To The Album, For details on Gateway Blend's privacy and cookie policies, please visit our. It’s just, warts and all, a pretty good character study with a terrific lead performance. She manages to make corny lines work – ‘How would you do that?’ she's asked of her mission and replies, ‘Violently’ – and convinces in the brutal one-on-one fight scenes. Variety highlighted Blake Lively's performance and it wasn't the only one. | Which is brilliant, considering the world has wondered if we’d ever get a female James Bond, and Mark Burnell’s screenplay (based on his very own novel) proves that we don’t need one. User Reviews The Rhythm Section is wonderfully acted by Blake Lively and immersively directed by Reed Morano, creating a tense and mostly engaging thriller. Fortunately, there's Lively, adopting a convincing British accent, who almost, but not quite, manages to infuse the convoluted goings-on with enough gravitas to make them convincing. Otherwise it's probably 50/50. Right now The Rhythm Section sits at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews. While many audience members might not know it, The Rhythm Section is the first in a series of books. There is no need for a female Bond when there are original female characters like Blake Lively’s Stephanie Patrick. Straightened out and hammered into shape by gruff Bear Grylls-alike Iain Boyd (a slightly miscast Jude Law), Patrick is, in true Nikita fashion, forged anew, here posing as an international assassin to root out her familyâs killer. We’ve heard this time and time again, that new releases will show a "new side" of established actors. Mike wrote: The Rhythm Section and Blake Lively’s Stephanie Patrick are given a truly R-rated start to something rougher than most spy films we've seen. So the feature film adaptation could in theory be the first of multiple movies. It’s destined to be viewed on a million long-haul flights, but it works perfectly well as a thriller. But in an action film, it’s tempo that matters. BBut this time it may actually be true. Then again, over a decade ago another January revenge film received a rotten score and it wound up being a fan favorite. CinemaBlend’s own Mike Reyes was a fan though and gave The Rhythm Section 3.5 out of 5 stars in his review. The Rhythm Section never loses the beat. After her entire family is wiped out in a terrorist attack, student Stephanie Patrick (Blake Lively) falls apart. “The Rhythm Section” features lots of terse, no-nonsense dialogue but some pretty corny voiceover — like the howler Lively’s obliged to recite to explain the film’s title. FAQ So, how is it? Full Review. With all the talk of a female Bond, this Eon-produced film (the first in a series of Patrick novels by Burnell) could have been the perfect vehicle for a double-X double-0. Fairly well according to The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw, who gave The Rhythm Section 3 out of 5 stars in his review and said: [Reed] Morano puts together good fight scenes, robust stunt work and tasty car chases.
