THE DISC You wind up rooting for the trio. Pretty good movie about a man and his wife who get caught up in murder and the police officer investigating the case. Very typical of Clouzot's films, he utilizes sound and score to enhance tension and his penchant for mystery uses the whodunit to good effect, always shifting his subjects from innocence to guilt and back. In Quai des Orfèvres, Clouzot’s pessimism manifests itself through a sharp description of marital pettiness and baseness of powerful people. About the only negative, and the reason the film gets a 9 and not a 10, is because there was a glaring plot hole. From here things go seriously wrong, his car is stolen before he leaves the premises so his pre-arranged alibi is out the window whilst meanwhile, unknown to him, his wife confesses to the murder to the photographer neighbour, a closet lesbian in love with her, who volunteers to return to the crime scene and retrieve Delair's scarf and as long as she's there, thoughtfully wipes her prints of the murder weapon, a champagne bottle. Love actually becomes an important element of the film, be it between spouses, extramarital, or filial. Direction by Henri-Georges Clouzot takes full advantage of every possible opportunity to bring out character and manages to keep the tempo at a fast clip all the time. | Rating: 10/10 I could mention Mozart and Beethoven, but that is not the point. mystery and thriller, Clouzot won the Best Director award at the 1947 Venice Film Festival, where Quai des Orfèvres garnered substantial buzz, and it’s easy to see why. Under the guise of a rather trivial police procedural, the film is an implacable study of manners coupled with a fast-paced crime thriller. Quai des Orfèvres is a treat for any fan of Clouzot’s body of work, or Cinema in general really, and a more profound film that it appears. So as the title indicates, Henri-George Clouzot's classic, is a police procedural, but there's more to see in the film besides the realistic and thrilling elements of a crime investigation. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. The murder on which the investigation hangs is but an excuse for the story, which combines a character study of a show business couple, detective work most realistically staged in authentic sets of police headquarters. "His character, his eagle-like profile and his unique way of speaking made him unforgettable." For those with a taste for classic movies, it's like finding a buried treasure. 6. |, October 12, 2008 Clouzot followed Le Corbeau, where no one knew who was penning the poison thus everyone was suspected, with another masterpiece, Quai des Orfevres four years later in which we know from the outset (or think we do) whodunnit. However, once it does, it's Clouzot at his best. Metacritic Reviews. You don't have to love French cinema to love Quai des Orfèvres, but once you watch this beautifully mounted motion picture, you just might. But perhaps the most surprising thing is that the usually morose to the point of morbidity Clouzot could display such a light touch. In addition to his dreary, stark depiction of post-war Paris, Clouzot injects plenty of film noir style into the narrative, resulting in a motion picture that's both beautiful and absorbing. Manage Cookie Settings The sounds of the Parisian cityscape are well rendered, and tense silences are clean. Clouzot often bristled when critics would cavalierly dub him “the French Hitchcock,” but like the American Master of Suspense he specialized in thrillers featuring dimensional, often desperate characters, and realized early in his career how emotional involvement can exponentially heighten a story’s sense of unease. The singing scenes with Jenny Lamour (Suzy Delair) are amazingly sung by the actress and incredibly entertaining. After his shocking masterpiece LE CORBEAU was denounced by both the Gestapo AND the Resistance (who felt its negative portrait of the French was pro-German; and they did have such a wonderful war), Clouzot was suspended from film-making activities for three years. This has been one of them.” Review: Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Quai des Orfèvres on Kino Lorber Blu-ray H enri-Georges Clouzot’s classic noir procedural Quai des Orfèvres doesn’t conclude, as episodes of the ABC police drama Naked City once did, with a narrator solemnly intoning, “There are eight million stories in the naked city. "The portrait of this cop is very detailed:we learn a lot of things about him,not necessarily connected with the Delair/Blier plot:he's a widower ,with a son he adores and who runs into school difficulties, particularly in geometry. So we get to know all the characters in depth. One of the most important manifesto of post-war French cinema. The story takes place in post-war Paris, where an accompanist, Maurice Martineau (Blier) lives with his singer wife, Marguerite, better known as Jenny Lamour (Suzy Delair). All rights reserved. Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018. Packed with memorable characters, sprinkled with a couple of musical numbers, and laced with some provocative themes, the film also paints an authentic slice-of-life portrait of post-World War II Paris as it tells its absorbing, nuanced story. Charles Dullin, legit actor who specializes in character parts, is suitably repulsive as the picture-maker. Contrast and clarity are quite good. Quai des Orfevres is a wonderful film, and it's no documentary. Her husband and accompanist, played by Bernard Blier, is a composed but jealous man. | |, September 25, 2009 Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2016. A real treat! Quai Des Orfèvres is distinguished (although a patent genre film), and my recommendation is inhibited only by knowledge of Clouzot's later efforts. We just don't know who did. The score helps to add a lot of weight to the scenes it's used in, and is well-placed. Watching Jouvet unravel the other characters as he begins to unravel the mystery is a brilliant lesson in minimalism. |, June 24, 2006
