He will also only be 28 years old at the end of August which is more attractive than a player at the twilight of his career. Maikel Franco takes his licks as the Royals’ regular third baseman these days, but the 26-year-old Gutierrez will serve as his backup, per MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan (via Twitter). Gutierrez is similar to both in that his problem isn't the quantity or quality of contact generated by his swing, so much as the trajectory it imparts on the ball. He takes heat on his fielding but it should be pointed out that he finished fourth last year in fielding percentage for third basemen in the senior circuit. The Rangers have some interest in a reunion with Robinson Chirinos and have also been connected to fellow top-remaining free agent Jason Castro. Gutierrez appeared in 20 big-league games this season, and would have added to that total were it not for a fractured toe. Jeff Mathis returns as well, the definition of a glove-first player in its extreme after a truly woeful .158/.209/.224 across his 248 player appearances in 2019. Kansas City Royals Maikel Franco Newsstand Transactions, By Mark Polishuk | December 12, 2019 at 3:30am CDT. Gutierrez ostensibly takes Reynolds’ roster spot. Injuries slowed his progress before a toe fracture ended his season in September. He's an above-average defender at the hot corner, complete with a strong arm. MLB.com’s … The 29-year-old journeyman had taken on the backup third baseman role, but he went hitless in 11 at-bats while striking out 7 times. If one of Lindor or Mike Clevinger does ultimately end up on the move, perhaps it should come as little surprise if a more stable outfield option comes back the other way. Sources told MLB.com that the Royals and Franco are in agreement on a one-year deal that would pay him $2.95 million with $1.05 million in performance bonuses. The Kansas City Royals have been busy this afternoon. Chris Holt, however, has taken on an entirely new role in the organization as the new Director of Pitching, Although outsiders might think that Shane Farrell’s hiring as Toronto’s amateur scouting director was aided by his family ties, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. The Braves have already spread some significant cash around this winter, adding free agents Cole Hamels, Will Smith, and Travis d’Arnaud while re-signing Chris Martin, Nick Markakis, Tyler Flowers, and Darren O’Day. As per Roster Resource’s Jason Martinez, Atlanta is set to spend just under $142.2MM on player salaries next season, which would be the largest payroll in franchise history. $142.2MM is a modest number compared to what most contending teams spend, though since there has long been speculation about how much money the Liberty Media ownership group would be willing to allocate to payroll, adding another major contract to the books (Donaldson’s next deal could well be in the area of $25MM in average annual value) might not be feasible, unless other salaries were cut loose. The Royals have reached agreement on a one-year deal with third baseman Maikel Franco, MLB.com’s Jon Heymanreports (via Twitter). Franco has spent time DHing recently due to a leg injury, so Gutierrez may get some playing time right off the bat. We will take a look at three possible landing spots for him as the KC Royals hope Franco can bring value in a deadline deal. Maikel Franco finally shows promise for KC Royals, signed for a budget-friendly $2.95 million, KC Royals: Jeison Guzman earning some recognition in spring training, Mike Conley Drops 25 to Lead Jazz Past Jayson Tatum, Injury-Riddled Celtics, KC Royals: It was Kyle Isbel, but looked like Gordon, The KC Royals' earliest Opening Day means more bitterly cold games, Top 25 Super Bowl Performances of All Time, Each NHL Team's Most Likely Future Hall of Famer, 30 Greatest Teams in Premier League History, 28 most memorable buzzer beaters in March Madness history. Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson has faced steep expectations after he was acquired as the centerpiece of the trade that sent Christian Yelich to Milwaukee. Interestingly, Franco’s addition would seemingly hint at a position switch for Hunter Dozier, who played 100 of his 139 games at the hot corner last season. MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan tweets that Dozier will move to right field, with Whit Merrifield moving to center field. That would also seem to indicate that Jorge Soler is primed to spend much of his time as a DH next year, though Dozier also has experience playing first base. (There’s also the possibility of a Soler trade, though the most recent reports suggest the Royals are more likely to hang onto Soler. They’ll now look for another solution at the keystone. But Franco, despite his prodigious power, seldom lived up to the billing after an impressive rookie campaign with the Phillies in 2015. Since he was signed for a budget-friendly $2.95 million with options that could push it to $4 million, they could have secured his services for more seasons and still not spent much more than that per year. Should the Rangers turn to the rest of the market, Maikel Franco could be a fall back option, per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. KANSAS CITY -- The Royals appear to have finished their search for a cost-efficient third baseman, agreeing to terms with former Phillies infielder Maikel Franco. You might recall Gutierrez's deal from our Royals prospect list. Agent Scott Boras indicated to reporters yesterday that geography isn’t going to be an “overriding consideration” for his client, as MLB.com’s TR Sullivan was among those to cover (Twitter link).
