All in all, I’ve had a lot of fun watching The 13th Warrior again, ten years later. Both the film and the novel it is based on merge two historically important texts, the Old English epic poem Beowulf and Ahmad ibn Fadlan’s real-life account of the Volga Vikings. He accurately relates Ibn Fadlan’s real account up to that famous burial, but then he smoothly shifts to fiction: the new leader of the Rus is a man named Buliwyf, and he immediately learns of a dark and ancient threat menacing a tribe to the north. And I, at least, know who my father is, you pig-eating son of a whore. Lo, there do I see…. The conversation continues in Latin, but the DVD subtitles continue to say: [speaking Greek]. The biggest mistakes you never noticed in The 13th Warrior (1999). It is great escapism though in a rather dark vein. The film debuted at No. Ahmad, who is neither a warrior nor an adventurer, is suddenly swept up in a world that he does not understand, fighting a foe that he isn’t even sure he believes exists. But at this moment, I beg only to live the next few minutes well. Oh maaaaaan. One of them has a Roman gladiator helm that’s iffy but at least sorta vaguely theoretically possible, and the whole horse-size thing is completely flipped around since the Arabs had the big horses and the Vikings had the wee ones, but, you know, I’ve got to set my historical brain aside at some point and just watch the film. It’s even got natural errors. There are some points, however, where the film hit the nail on the proverbial head. Ignoring my attempts to get this timeline to make sense, the movie presses on, and Ibn Fadlan’s delegation is indeed beset by dangerous Tartars—which is cool for the few seconds of screen time it requires in order to serve as an overly complex reason for Ibn Fadlan to run toward a river where he and his company see a longship. I think it is a great movie and watch it often. There are a few things about Vikings in The 13th Warrior that deserve to be mentioned. Ibn Fadlan: They bid me take my place among them. Ultimately their bravery, cunning, and honor shine through. We are first introduced to the protagonist Ahmad, a Muslim Arabian nobleman, exiled from his homeland. Don’t be surprised to see, when I get around to finishing it, that this film ranks very high on my list of the best film adaptations of Beowulf. They’re paying attention to the problem of language.
