The sampled voice of the late Doors singer Jim Morrison adorns the lounge-like Sunset (Bird Of Prey). Pumped! Regarding this submission, are you sure you weren't trying to submit. The techniques and sounds that he uses are the same (analog synthesizers, filtered, jerky and striking samples and fat dance beats) but what he does with it is something different. The cover of Norman Cook's breakout Fatboy Slim album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby, was a good clue to the contents, picturing as it did thousands of LPs straining the racks in Cook's record room -- undoubtedly just a small portion of his massive collection of sampling material. Drop The Hate published by Universal Music Publ. Ltd. 11. Despite the torrid pace set early on, there's still quite a bit of the used-bin scavenger left in Cook; the most patented big beat anthems here, "Ya Mama" and "Mad Flava," include all the expected displays of crowd-moving hip-hop calls, unhinged beatbox funk, continual drum breakdowns, and plenty of rawk riffs. With only a couple of rough edges (while I love Jim Morrison, I'm not feeling "Bird of Prey"), I'd say it's probably my favorite Fatboy Slim album. Listen on Apple Music. "Song for Shelter" is a proof. But you've also got two of the harder tracks that Cook's done in recent years, especially the monster "Star 69" which devastated many a dancefloor when first unleashed on an unsuspecting public (by Danny Howells in my case). The first single, "Sunset (Bird of Prey)," is another potential crossover move, featuring what is easily the album's most recognizable sample source -- Jim Morrison from the Doors. Sniffy electronica purism aside, though, Cook remains, if not the best overall producer in the dance world, certainly in its top rank. 500575-2, 500575.2, SKI 500575 2, 5005752000, (CDr, Album, Promo, RE, Pla + CDr, Album, Comp, Pro), Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars (Clean Version), Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars (15th Anniversary), Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars 15th Anniversary, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, CD, Album, ASW 50460, 7243 850460 2 5, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, 2xLP, Album, RE, RM, BRASSIC104LP, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, CD, Album, Tex, SKI 500575 2, 500575 2, 5005752000, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars 15th Anniversary, CD, Album, RE + CD, Comp, BRASSIC104CD, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, CD, Album, BRASSIC20CD, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, 2xLP, Album, Gat, BRASSIC20LP, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars, CD, Album, ASW 50460-2, Musikexpress: Die Platten Des Monats (The Records Of The Month) 2000-2009. With his third LP, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, Fatboy Slim's Norman Cook pulls away slightly from the notoriously fickle pop charts and crossover kids courted on his last record. Inside, Cook unfolded a party record for the ages, long on fun (though understandably short on staying power), chock full of samples pillaged from all manner of obscure soul shouters and old-school rap crews, triggered and tweaked ad nauseam. 6:58 PREVIEW Ya Mama. A great last blast of late 90's big beat. The black sound of the plate is enhanced by the presence of soul singer Macy Gray (she sings the funky Love Life and the sultry gospel Demons) and Bootsy Collins, who can be heard on the song Weapon Of Choice. In all, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars is possibly Norman Cook's best possible statement after being -- nearly simultaneously -- picked up by a multitude of notoriously fickle pop consumers and thrown away by his previously rock-solid dance fanbase. Fatboy Slim has not lost its soul on "Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars". Like his fellow Moby has the soul and gospel he discovered, which can be heard in the opener Talking Bout My Baby, Drop The Hate and religious ode to house: Song For Shelter. One final note, I've seen an import of this album that has a Bird of Prey remix on it (possibly from Japan,) but I believe that remix is already listed here. After a short intro, Cook tears into an acid techno rampage named "Star 69," a track that takes few prisoners and sounds closer to Plastikman than Propellerheads. 2000 Preview SONG TIME Talking Bout My Baby. I think Norman did some of his soulful work on this one, especially with turns from Macy Gray who really makes the album. Instead, he makes a conscious attempt to inject some real hedonism back into the world of dance -- he is a DJ, after all. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice wrote "this is where Norman Cook achieves the nonstop stupidity breakbeats alone could never bring him", calling it "All shallow, all pure as a result—pure escape, pure delight, and, as the cavalcade of gospel postures at the end makes clear, pure spiritual yearning. With his third LP, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, Fatboy Slim's Norman Cook pulls away slightly from the notoriously fickle pop charts and crossover kids courted on his last record.
